LCLD’s 1L Scholars Program Prepares Law Students for Future Success
A graduate of the University of Southern California, Xander Saide has attended Cornell Law School in pursuit of a juris doctor since 2015. As a law student, Xander Saide has participated in several projects and programs, including the 1L Scholars Program of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD).
Dedicated to creating a diverse US legal profession, LCLD oversees a number of programs for high-potential law students and attorneys. Through its 1L Scholars Program, the group connects diverse first-year law students with internships at LCLD member organizations. Those selected for the program also take part in a professional development summit focused on fostering attendees’ leadership, networking, and legal skills.
Since founding the program in 2011, LCLD has helped hundreds of aspiring attorneys prepare for their future careers. The organization is currently accepting applications for 2018. To qualify, applicants must be in their first-year at an ABA-approved law school. In addition to receiving summer internship opportunities, 2018 1L Scholars will attend the 2018 1L LCLD Scholars Summit, which will be held May 22-24 in Philadelphia. Training for a Spartan Race
In May and June of 2017, Xander Saide worked as a summer associate for Goodwin Procter LLP in Washington, DC. In his spare time, Xander Saide enjoys obstacle races such as the Spartan Race.
The Spartan Race is a four-mile-long race with more than 15 obstacles such as barb wire, ropes, and plenty of mud. While endurance running is an essential component of anyone training for the event, a participant should be ready for anything, so their training routine should also include speed combined with upper and lower body strength conditioning.
For endurance, contestants should be able to run at least six miles, and since there are usually steep hills, hill training at least once per week should be part of the training regimen.
Box jumps, wall climbs, crawling under barbed wire, traversing monkey bars, and carrying sandbags up a hill are all obstacles that will require strength, so training should involve pull-ups, squats, lunges, and push-ups. It’s also important not to overtrain, so Spartan Race training should include one or two days of rest each week to prevent injuries and allow the body time to recover.
