Training for a Spartan Race
In May and June of 2017, Xander Saide worked as a summer associate for Goodwin Procter LLP in Washington, DC. In his spare time, Xander Saide enjoys obstacle races such as the Spartan Race.
The Spartan Race is a four-mile-long race with more than 15 obstacles such as barb wire, ropes, and plenty of mud. While endurance running is an essential component of anyone training for the event, a participant should be ready for anything, so their training routine should also include speed combined with upper and lower body strength conditioning.
For endurance, contestants should be able to run at least six miles, and since there are usually steep hills, hill training at least once per week should be part of the training regimen.
Box jumps, wall climbs, crawling under barbed wire, traversing monkey bars, and carrying sandbags up a hill are all obstacles that will require strength, so training should involve pull-ups, squats, lunges, and push-ups. It’s also important not to overtrain, so Spartan Race training should include one or two days of rest each week to prevent injuries and allow the body time to recover.
